Applications of the piston ring
KOALADIESEL engine piston rings are extensively applied in various diesel engines, offering power solutions for multiple industries. Whether in the automotive sector, shipping, energy industry, construction, agriculture, and other fields, they serve as crucial components ensuring efficient engine operation and stable performance.
The function &types of the piston ring.
An Indispensable Component in Engines
In internal combustion machinery, piston rings are one of the crucial components. Despite their small size,
they play a key role in the normal operation and performance of the engine. Let’s delve into the function of
piston rings and their indispensability in the engine.
1. Basic Construction and Role of Piston Rings
Piston rings are circular parts mounted on the piston, usually made of metal materials.
Their primary function is to seal the space between the piston and the cylinder wall, preventing
gas leakage
from the combustion chamber. This helps maintain engine pressure and ensures maximum
combustion efficiency.
2. Sealing and Lubrication
Piston rings not only help maintain gas tightness but also assist in forming a lubricating film during piston
movement.
This reduces friction between the piston and cylinder wall, decreasing energy losses. By reducing friction,
engine efficiency is improved, and fuel economy is enhanced.
3. Heat Conduction and Dissipation
Pistons are subjected to high temperatures during combustion, and piston rings help transfer some of the heat
to the cylinder wall for dissipation. This prevents the piston from overheating and protects the engine from damage.
4. Controlling Oil Consumption
Piston rings also play a crucial role in controlling oil consumption. They prevent oil from entering the
combustion chamber,
reducing the generation of emissions and environmental pollution.
5. Providing Sealing and Compression
Another key function of piston rings is to provide a tight seal, ensuring the maintenance of pressure in the
combustion chamber.
This is vital for engine performance as it affects combustion intensity and efficiency.
The surface treatment
Chrome plating
Chrome plating is one of the most widely used surface treatments for piston rings. The Vickers hardness of chromium metal reaches 800-1000, and its melting point is 1800 degrees Celsius, thus the chrome-plated piston ring has high resistance to abrasive wear and adhesive wear, and excellent wear resistance.
CKS

CKS
CKS is highly suitable for the top rings of high-speed diesel engines. The entire coating features a network of cracks embedded with alumina ceramic particles. Compared to hard chrome coatings, the wear rate of this coating is reduced by approximately 50%, while significantly enhancing its anti-scuffing capability.
PVD
PVD technology (Physical Vapor Deposition) is a method of depositing hard reactive coatings onto the surface of piston rings from the vapor phase.Due to its ceramic properties, PVD-coated rings exhibit extremely high anti-scuffing and wear resistance capabilities.
PVD

Phosphating
a layer of phosphate salt crystals is formed on the surface of the ring. The phosphating film is softer than the base material of the ring, making it more prone to wear. This accelerates the ring’s bedding-in process.
moly spray
Molybdenum has a melting point of 2600 degrees Celsius, and both its surface and substrate exhibit porosity. Piston rings treated with molybdenum spraying possess strong anti-adhesive wear capabilities. As a result, molybdenum-sprayed piston rings are widely used in various high-strength and high-load engines.
moly spray

Tin or copper plating
The coatings of tin and copper have very low hardness, and thus, in a sense, they serve as “lubricants”.

THE PROCESS FLOW
Step 1: Melting and pouring
Place the raw materials into a 1-ton medium-frequency smelting furnace, melt them, and pour out cylindrical piston ring blanks

Step 2: Piston Ring Slicing
Machining on CNC lathe, cutting into single rings。

Step 3: Quenching process
Using a heat treatment furnace, employing different temperatures according to different materials, to achieve qualified metallographic structure and hardness for the piston ring after treatment.

Step 4: Rough and fine grinding of the ring sides
Rough grinding removes oxidation or other substances resulting from heat treatment, and fine grinding removes deviations caused by the grinding tool so that the ring height is close to the height of the finished product.

Step 5: Ultrasonic automatic cleaning machine
Utilize ultrasonic cleaning to remove grease and stains.

Step 6:camlathe turning inner and outer circles&milling the opening with the milling cutter.
The inner and outer contour machining of piston rings is a process that uses the method of imitating shapes to perform elliptical machining on the inner and outer circles. the inner and outer contour machining is a crucial step in the manufacturing of cast iron piston rings. Its outcome will directly impact the radial pressure distribution status of the piston ring and its performance in the engine. Additionally, the machining surface of contour machining determines the positioning reference and machining allowance for subsequent machining processes.

Step 7:surface treatment
Surface treatment processes include phosphating, chrome plating, moly spraying, CKS, and PVD etc.

Step 7:Laser typing
Surface treatment processes include phosphating, chrome plating, moly spraying, CKS, and PVD etc.

Step 7:Packing in box
apply rust-proof oil before packing.
